Pitso Mosimane has officially been unveiled as the new head coach of Bafana Bafana, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty, negotiations and discussions between the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the highly decorated coach. Mosimane was presented at SAFA House on Tuesday, with the long-awaited announcement confirming him as the successor to Hugo Broos. SAFA’s National Executive Committee had already approved Mosimane’s appointment in August, although SAFA president Danny Jordaan said the organisation still needed to “tie up some loose ends” before the appointment could be formally announced. Those outstanding matters ultimately centred on contract negotiations and the composition of Mosimane’s technical team. Reports indicated that the coach wanted members of his trusted backroom staff to join him, including fitness coach Kabelo Rangoaga and performance analyst Musi Matlaba. A Second Permanent Stint With Bafana Mosimane previously managed Bafana Bafana between 2010 and 2012, having also served as an assistant and caretaker coach before taking over on a permanent basis. His first tenure ended controversially after South Africa failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. Bafana played to a 0-0 draw against Sierra Leone in their final qualifier and initially believed the result was enough to secure qualification. However, the head-to-head rule ultimately worked against South Africa. Mosimane returns to the national team more than a decade later with significantly greater experience and an impressive continental record. Following his departure from Bafana, he enjoyed a highly successful period with Mamelodi Sundowns, guiding the club to the CAF Champions League title in 2016. He later took charge of Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he won the CAF Champions League twice and reached three consecutive finals. That record of success on the continental stage is among the key factors behind the high expectations surrounding his return. Immediate Pressure: AFCON Qualifiers Mosimane will have little time to settle into his new role, with his immediate focus turning to Bafana Bafana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. South Africa are scheduled to face Guinea and Eritrea in September, giving Mosimane an early opportunity to establish his approach and assess the players at his disposal. Bafana are also entering a new era after a historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign under Broos, during which South Africa reached the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time.
